[Note: Alhamdulillaah, this class completes the explanation of the Book of Purification from Umdatul-Ahkām. Future classes would start with the Book of Prayer, inshā’Allāh.]

Chapter on Menstruation:

Hadeeth #1:

‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated that Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaish (رضي الله عنها) asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), “I get persistent bleeding (in between my periods) and do not become clean. Shall I refrain from praying?” He replied: “No, this is from a blood vessel. leave the prayers only for the days on which you usually get the menses and then take a bath and offer your prayers.”

And in another wording: (He said ﷺ:) “This is not menstruation. When menstruation comes, leave off the prayer; and when it ends, wash the blood from yourself and then pray.”

Hadeeth #2:

‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated that Umm Ḥabībah (رضي الله عنها) had bleeding in between her periods (Istiḥādah) for 7 years. She asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about it. He ordered her to take a bath (after the termination of her actual periods). So, she used to take a bath for every prayer.

Hadeeth #3:

‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and I used to wash from one vessel when we were both junub.

When I was menstruating, he would order me to wrap myself up and he would embrace me (whilst I was in that state).

And when he was doing al-‘Itikāf, he would put his head out for me and I would wash it whilst I was still menstruating.

Hadeeth #4:

‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to lean on my lap and recite the Qur’ān while I was on my menses.

Hadeeth #5:

Mu’ādhah said: I asked ‘Āisha (رضي الله عنها): “Why is it that a menstruating woman makes up her missed fasts, but she does not make up her prayers? She (‘Āisha (رضي الله عنها)) said:
“Are you Ḥarūriyyah?” I said: “I am not Ḥarūriyyah, but I am only inquiring.” She said: “We passed through such (periods of menstruation), and we were ordered to make up our missed fasts, but not ordered to make up our prayers.”

Several points discussed, including:

  1. Definition of Menstruation and the importance of learning about it
  2. Some rulings regarding Menstruation
  3. What a woman with Istiḥādah (continuous bleeding after menses) should do
