A Reminder About ‘Aashooraa’ & An Update On the Class of Saturday, August 29th
Salām ‘alaikum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh,
Considering that many would inshā’Allāh be occupied with fasting tomorrow, Ustādh Uways – may Allāh preserve him – has advised that tomorrow’s classes be cancelled.
As a reminder, here are some hadeeth regarding fasting on ‘Aashoorā’:
Abu Qatadah (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wassallam) was asked about fasting ‘Aashoorā’ (the tenth day of Muharram), and he replied, “It expiates the sins of the preceding year.” [Muslim].
‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wassallam) said, “If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth (day of Muharram).” [Muslim].
‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him and his father) was asked about fasting the day of ‘Aashoorā’ and he responded: I do not know that the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wassallam) fasted any day seeking its virtue over other days except for this day (‘Aashoorā’), and no month except for this month, meaning Ramadān.” [Muslim].
Please note that according to the moon-sighting in Nigeria by the NSCIA headed by the Sultan, Saturday, August 29th is the 9th of Muharram and Sunday is the day of ‘Aashoorā’, the 10th of Muharram.
May Allāh accept our fasts and pardon our shortcomings.
